New Orleans is still the perfect place to host an event that centers around the cocktail. The spirit of the cocktail is alive in the French Quarter where everyone is encouraged to not only taste and drink a variety of inspired concoctions, but to wander with them down the cobbled roads towards the next enthusiastic mixologist. The New Orleans Culinary and Cultural Preservation Society produces Tales of the Cocktail every year—a series of seminars, demonstrations, cocktail parties and design showcases. The non-profit organization is on a mission to preserve the rich culinary heritage that has evolved from New Orleans, a mission made more challenging since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
Last year, events that attracted visitors back into New Orleans' rebuilding hospitality industry, were vital. The event spanned five days from July 19th to the 23rd, and included special guests Kevin Brauch, “The Thirsty Traveler,” mixologist and author Dale DeGroff, Chef Suvir Saran and Chef Marcus Samuelsson. The annual event is one of the largest mixology events in the country, attracting bar chefs from around the world to share innovative techniques and products, as well as celebrate the classics. A few of our favorite recipes: a classic English summertime Pimm's Cup and a dry, floral Elderflower Martini, among others.
