Death & Co | Denver

july 2022

Alex Jump was planning on becoming a photojournalist until she studied abroad in Florence, Italy. She interned at the largest wine shop in the city, pouring tasters, slicing cheese, and becoming more and more confident that she belonged in the hospitality industry. Jump returned home to Chattanooga, Tennessee where she started bartending at local restaurants before scoring the bar manager role at Easy Bistro & Bar. By the age of 23, she was promoted to overseeing the beverage programs at both East Bistro and their new, more casual, whiskey-focused sister restaurant, Main Street Meats.

With dreams of working at Death & Co’s upcoming Denver location, Jump moved to the Mile High City in 2017. While the New York-based cocktail bar was under construction, she joined her long-time friends, Rising Star Community Winners McLain Hedges and Mary Allison Wright, at RiNo Yacht Club, before landing a bartender position at Mercantile Dining & Provision. After winning the 2017 Southwest Regionals for the Speed-Rack competition, Jump connected with Death & Co Owners Alex Day and Dave Kaplan, who hired her as bar manager in 2018. Since then, Jump has been named a finalist for Bombay Sapphire’s “Most Imaginative Bartender” in 2019 and included on the 2021 Forbes “30 under 30 Food and Drink” list. In 2020, Jump co-founded Focus on Health with her business partner, Lauren Paylor, where they use their platform to advocate for the physical and mental wellbeing of the food and beverage industry. Through their podcast, Jump discusses health, wellness, and inequality in the hospitality sector.
