May 2022

After graduating from college, Nate Underwood began brewing at home—a hobby inspired by his connections with local farmers and Nashville’s growing food movement. Realizing the opportunity to scale up his passion into a full-on business, Underwood teamed up with his friends, Matt Fung-A-Fat and Tyler Pate, to open a brewery. With Fung-A-Fat focusing on marketing and business development, Pate leading financial operations, and Underwood as the visionary brewer, Harding House Brewing Co. opened in 2018 in The Nations neighborhood.

Using 100 percent Southern-grown malt with the majority sourced from Tennessee, Harding House Brewing Co. strives to make beer with a true sense of place—beer that reflects the culture, community, and agriculture of the region they call home. Underwood, Fung-A-Fat, and Pate believe that beer starts in the soil, so they look to their community of farmers to draw a connection between beer and the land. With a rotating selection of taps that highlight hyper-local grains and seasonal additives, like their “Proleptic” green tomato farmhouse ale and “Native Fruits,” a persimmon and pawpaw farmhouse ale, Underwood firmly believes that beer can be just as seasonally-driven as the most refined restaurant menus in the world.
