Harry & Ida’s & Duck’s Eatery | New York, NY

October 2019

Will Horowitz spent his formative childhood years in White Plains, New York, winning junior ping-pong championships, fishing off Long Island, and hanging out at his grandfather’s two Jewish delis in Manhattan. With a thirst for adventure, Horowitz moved to Colorado as a teenager to ski. He later traveled to remote Burmese and Thai villages, meditating, foraging, and cooking along the way.

When he ran out of funds for his travels in 2009, he returned to New York and was tapped to develop the menu for SPiN, the Susan Sarandon-backed ping-pong club in Manhattan. In 2012, Horowitz and his sister Julie opened Ducks Eatery in the East Village, blending their delicatessen heritage with Asian and Southern influences and techniques. Horowitz’s style has won numerous accolades, including the top prize at the 2014 “Brisket King of NYC” competition and second place in the Kingsford Invitational barbecue contest.

In 2015, the Horowitz siblings opened Harry & Ida’s Meat and Supply Co., a deli and provisions shop named after their great-grandparents, selling everything from smoked meats to grilled eel sandwiches. In March 2019, Harper Collins published Horowitz’s cookbook titled Salt Smoke Time: Homesteading and Heritage Techniques for the Modern Kitchen.
