Evan Rich’s cooking career began with a car accident. At age 15, Evan totaled his parents’ car and worked as a dishwasher to pay down the damages. With a growing interest in the restaurant industry, Evan headed to the Culinary Institute of America and graduated in 2000. He moved to Manhattan and began his career as a pastry assistant at the Austrian-inflected Danube, working his way to executive sous chef at the sister restaurant, Bouley at Home.
While working at Bouley, Evan met his future wife and business partner, Sarah. Sarah decided to cook after stumbling upon the French Culinary Institute’s website. She packed her bags and left her native Texas for New York City. After graduating from FCI in 2000, Sarah went directly to Bouley, where she had completed her externship.
In 2007, the now husband-and-wife team headed west and landed in San Francisco. Sarah took a sous chef position at Michael Mina while Evan worked as chef de cuisine at Quince. They both moved on to Coi, rounding out their skills and experience before opening their first venture, Rich Table, in 2012. For its casual Californian fare with fine-dining sensibilities, Evan and Sarah earned StarChefs Rising Stars awards in 2013 and a Michelin star in 2018. In 2017, the duo opened another venture, a counter service chicken-centric eatery called RT Rotisserie, which recently added a second location in August 2019. The duo co-authored the cookbook Rich Table, which was nominated for a James Beard award in 2019.
