Raised in Austin, Minnesota, Joe Mohrfeld began homebrewing while he was in college, but didn’t take the plunge professionally until he finished graduate school. Mohrfeld initially broke into the industry by volunteering at Odell Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, Colorado. First hired as a packaging team member, he dedicated himself to learning what it takes to run Colorado’s second-largest craft brewery. Mohrfeld eventually became the head brewer and led the development of different beer styles and brands for Odell. While there, he also completed a formal brewing education at the Institute of Brewing and Distilling through the Master Brewers Association of America, gaining formal training in sensory evaluation and beer style recognition.
In 2012, Mohrfeld left Fort Collins for Austin, Texas, to help found Pinthouse Pizza with a group of friends and business partners. As director of brewing, Mohrfeld oversees brewing operations at the flagship and Pinthouse Pizza’s second location in South Lamar. Consistently in search of innovative ways to express hop character, Mohrfeld gets to experiment on 70 beers a year, with the mission of redefining the flavor and aroma of the IPA. A third location with a production facility is in the works for 2018.
