An Arkansas native, Shannon Sturgis graduated from Hendrix College in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. She began working as a legal assistant, followed by a typesetter at a local paper store. In 2007, Sturgis broke into the photography world at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette as a staff photographer for Sync Magazine and Arkansas Life. In this role, she shot a variety of subjects including people, food, restaurants, homes, and fashion.
From 2010 to 2013, she served as the photo editor for StarChefs, photographing food and cocktails from up and coming chefs for the Rising Stars awards program, as well as established industry pros from around the world at the International Chefs Congress. During her tenure at StarChefs, Sturgis traveled with her camera to cities across America, including Portland, Chicago, Austin, Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, among others. In 2013, Sturgis committed full-time to freelance photography. Under the name, Shannon Sturgis Photography, Sturgis shoots culinary, lifestyle, and weddings from her home base in Brooklyn, New York. She is the rare cocktail specialist, known for bringing the personality out of any beverage in any circumstances. Sturgis has accumulated a sizable following for her work with her Instagram account @shannonshootscocktails. Her work has been published in Saveur, Whisky Advocate, Wine Spectator, Mutineer Magazine, Beer Advocate, Edible Brooklyn, Edible Manhattan, Dessert Professional, and the Oxford American.
